If you care about the environment, it’s not enough to just buy an eco-friendly car and call it a day. You can also perform eco-friendly car maintenance to reduce your footprint, small as it may already be, by following these tips.

Wash Your Car Yourself

Commercial car washes are fast, but they’re not efficient. They use between 40 to 50 gallons per car, a lot of which is wasted, as well as harmful chemicals. The best thing for your car — and the environment — is to give it the personal, bespoke treatment.

Use Two Buckets Instead of a Garden Hose

Washing your car yourself isn’t automatically eco-friendly. Instead of using a garden hose, which could lead you to wasting even more water than an automatic car wash, use two buckets. The first should have soapy water and the second should have clear water.

Shop for Green Interior Cleaners

Many commercial interior cleaners have warning signs about inhalation hazards. They often contain volatile organic compounds or ammonia, which can be harmful to your lungs. And even if you avoid breathing it in, it still ends up in the atmosphere. Shop for ammonia-free interior cleaners that use natural cleaning agents and scented oils.
